Remembering Roger Fredericks

Written By: Jean Fredericks

The PGA (and the World) has lost a Golf Instruction legend. Roger Fredericks passed away on September 4, 2024 of undisclosed causes in San Diego, California. Known for his innovative Flexibility Programs, Roger has helped legions of Golf legends such as Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Bruce Summerhays, just to name a few.

Roger’s passion for golf started early in life with his first achievement as Jr. Club Champion at his home golf course, Bel-Air Country Club in Beverly Hills, California at the age of 9. He was headed to qualifying for the PGA Tour when he broke his wrist in a freak accident (on a golf cart no less) when his life took his passion for golf to instruction of the game. Roger founded the Del Mar Golf College in Del Mar, California in 1991 introducing the concepts of flexibility, mobility and using Video as a means to capture the swing of his students to see a clear view of their swing mechanics. In the mid 1990’s Roger took his programs to Hawaii, opening the Kaanapali Golf College at the Kaanapali Golf Course and Resort on Maui. There he began his teaching of many golf legends from the Champion’s Tour as they played at Kaanapali each year.

“Roger had a true passion for golf and learning how the body’s function related to the perfect golf swing.” Said long-time friend and colleague, and member of the Golf Digest’s Legends of Golf Instruction, Mike Malaska. “In all my years’ experience, I’ve not known anyone who has been so passionate about understanding the golf swing motion. He was a good friend and will be greatly missed.”

Paul Wilson, Director of Golf at Bear’s Best in Las Vegas says, “if it wasn’t for Roger Fredricks, I would still be a tight golfer with limited mobility. I’m so thankful for his understanding and passion that not only helped me, but countless others play better golf.”

Roger’s method of instruction reached millions with his hit Informercial, “Roger Fredericks Reveals Secrets to Golf Swing Flexibility” which first aired in 2005. The show quickly became one of the most successful of its kind on the Golf Channel. Roger released a book a few years later, “Secrets of Golf Instruction and Flexibility” and then a second edition with a new name, “The Flexible Golf Swing, The Ultimate Guide to Mastering Golf’s True Fundamentals” (Rodale Press) both books featuring a Forward by Arnold Palmer.

Clark Renner, Golf Instructor in Carlsbad, California said,“Roger was a true pioneer in the golf industry touting the benefits of flexibility, fitness and nutrition long before it became accepted. He gave me my first teaching job and was instrumental I n helping me shape so many ideas about teaching golf. He was a great friend and mentor. I will miss his many stories about this great game and about the wonderful life he lived.”

A true legend never dies, their legacy lives on in the passion they passed along to those they met along their life’s path. Thank you Roger Fredericks for your contribution to so many in the Golf World and beyond.
