MURRIETA, CA (June 23-26, 2025) — Joey Vrzich of La Jolla claims the 125th California State Open Championship after a two-hole playoff, posting a score of 11-under-par across four days of competition at Bear Creek Golf Club.

One hundred and forty four players arrived to compete in the 72-hole Championship this week, which is the oldest professional golf championship in the State. It was first contested in 1900 and won by U.S. Open Champion Willie Smith. Notable past champions include Jason Gore (1997 & 2004), Dennis Paulson (1990 & ’96), Kirk Triplett (1991), Roger Maltbie (1974), Jerry Barber (1959), Gene Littler (1954), Horton Smith (1934), and the legendary Walter Hagen (1915). Past participants include a virtual who’s who of golf history from Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, Corey Pavin, Lloyd Mangrum, and Sam Snead.

Vrzich and Chad Hambright of Encinitas finished regulation tied at 11-under-par, forcing a playoff to determine who would be crowned the champion. After both players made par on the first playoff hole, Vrzich sealed the victory with a par on the second playoff hole to claim his first California State Open Championship title. In addition to taking home a $10,000 payout, Vrzich has earned a lifetime exemption into the California State Open.

After his victory, Vrzich said, “It was a pretty good day. I had a hot start; I birdied the second and third holes of the day. I held it together coming down the stretch, and it was nice to come away with a win in the playoff.”

Low amateur honors went to Kevin An of Riverside after posting a 7-under-par total for the tournament. An is currently a Junior at the University of Los Angeles and is a member of the men’s golf team.
