2020 San Diego County Open
FINAL ROUND RECAP
CHULA VISTA, California – Sahith Theegala of Chino Hills came out victorious at the San Diego County Open after three-days of stellar golf. Theegala fired rounds of 69, 66, and 64 for a three-day total 14-under par, 199 to leapfrog several strong competitors.
Theegala started the final round three-strokes back of round-two leader Josh Anderson of Murrieta, however, Anderson was unable to avoid costly mistakes which ultimately took him out of contention.
Instead, it was Derek Castillo of Yorba Linda and Manny Manzone of Scottsdale, AZ that gave Theegala a run for the Champion’s trophy. They both fired final round 66’s for a three-day total 13-under par, 200, one stroke-behind Theegala’s total.
Theegala was the star of the day, however, with eight-birdies and a lone blemish on hole #8 with a bogey. A clutch birdie on the challenging water guarded par-3 17th propelled him atop the leaderboard. Sahith took home the $10,000 champion’s check and a Kangen Water Ionic Filtration System by Enagic that is valued at $4,280.
This victory comes on the heels of a very successful 2020 which saw Theegala win some of collegiate golf’s most prestigious awards: Fred Haskins Award, Ben Hogan Award, and the Jack Nicklaus Award.
Kento Yamawaki of Encinitas put together three solid rounds to take home Low Amateur honors and with a three-day total 12-under par 201.
