Golf 101 Gear

Beginner Gear Guidelines

Golf can be intimidating and expensive, especially if you don’t know what equipment you need! A FULL golf club set includes UP to 14 clubs. A complete set of golf clubs doesn’t have to include all 14 clubs. Many beginner sets contain 8 to 12 clubs, giving you the essentials to get started. Look for a set that includes a mix of clubs, such as a driver, fairway woods, hybrids, irons, wedges and a putter. Each club serves a different purpose, helping you handle different situations on the course and build confidence as you learn the game.

Watch a video here for a quick run through of what clubs to use in different places on the course: MAKE GOLF YOUR THING

Driver: The longest club in a golfer’s bag, designed to hit the ball as far as possible off the tee, usually on par-4s and par-5s

Fairway woods: Designed to hit long shots with distance and a higher launch than a driver typically provides

Hybrid: Designed to hit the ball a good distance when you aren’t close enough to use a short iron. A mix between a wood and an iron. They’re often easier to hit and great for longer shots.

Iron: Designed to hit the ball toward the green with distance and accuracy. Irons have thinner, flatter clubheads than drivers and hybrids. They are typically numbered 3 through 9. Lower-numbered irons go farther, while higher-numbered irons are used for shorter shots.

Wedge: Designed for short, high shots that help you get the ball close to the hole. Think of it as your precision club around the green

Putter: The club you use to roll the ball into the hole once you’re on the green
