History of the Southern California Open
The Southern California Open is the third oldest golf tourney played in the United States. The oldest event is the U. S. Open, which was started in 1895 by the United States Golf Association. Second on the list is the Western Open, which began in 1899 at the Butler National Golf Course in Oak Brook, Illinois. Little did anyone know at the Coronado Country Club in 1899 that more than 113 years later the Southern California Open would still be consider as a major event among the Professional Golfers Association of America.
The records show that Willie Anderson won what some call the “Southern Cal” with a 180 score fired at Coronado CC in 1899. However, this event only sparked the start of the Southern California Open. The first regularly scheduled Southern Cal was staged at the Los Angeles Country Club in 1900 and was won by amateur Hugh May, who shot 371 for 72 holes.
In 2013, the return of the Championship was due in great part to Monarch Beach Golf Links PGA General Manager, Eric Lohman, who dedicated a tremendous amount of personal time and effort to see the tournament regain its former glory.
