The yearly PGA Tour stop to the West Coast should be named, for the year of 2016, the “Smock Coast Swing” as Brian Smock, PGA, of Coronado Golf Course will represent the SCPGA at the Northern Trust Open. This will be Brian’s second PGA Tour event in the last 3 weeks, as he played in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.
Smock stamped his ticket to the Northern Trust Open with a solid round of 70 at Seacliff Country Club on February 8, 2016, but it wasn’t easy. After posting the impressive score he sat around and day dreamed of what it would be like to walk down the same Riviera Country Club fairways that greats such as Ben Hogan and Sam Snead have walked. However his dreaming came to a halt, and it was back to being a competitor, when reigning SCPGA Section Champion Chad Sorensen, PGA, came in with the same score of 70.
With a spot in a PGA Tour event up for grabs, it was a fitting to see the 2015 SCPGA Section Champion and one of the hottest players in the section battle it out. However all Smock needed was one hole to outlast Sorensen, and with a par, his dream of walking the Riviera fairways became a reality. Congratulations and best of luck to Brian Smock, PGA, at the 2016 Northern Trust Open!
This event was also the second and final tournament in the Club Car Aggregate Series. The overall winner of the 2016 series was Brian Smock, PGA. His total of 140 for both aggregate series events earned him a $500 bonus thanks to Club Car. In second was Chad Sorensen, PGA, totaling 143 earning a bonus of $400. Third place was Jon Fiedler, with a total of 145, and a bonus check worth $300. The fourth place finisher was Kenny Pigman, PGA, and he will be able to cash a $200 bonus check. Rounding out the top five were three players tied at 147; Michael Block; PGA, Steve Holmes; PGA, and Vinnie Poncino, PGA who earned $33.33 for their efforts.
