After a great 2018 APA season, the top 10 players on the POY standings (and 2 Captain’s picks) were rewarded with the opportunity to represent the Southern California PGA at the North/South Apprentice – Assistant’s Cup Matches. This year’s event, hosted at The Alisal (Ranch Course), marked the 20thtime that the best Associates and Assistants from the Southern California PGA went head to head against the best of the Northern California PGA. Both sides were looking to add another notch in their victory totals, as the South has claimed the cup 12 times and the North has held it 7.
The Ryder Cup style matches were broken up into 3 sessions over 2 days; Day 1- Morning Fourball, Afternoon Foursomes and Day 2 – Singles Matches. There were 24 possible points up for grabs between all the formats, and the team that won the most points after day 2 were to go home with the cup.
The first day of the matches began with frigid temperatures, causing the matches to be delayed an hour due to frost. However, the temperature would not be able to cool down the South Team as they got off to a blazing start in the morning matches winning 5 of 6 points. The team continued their hot play in the afternoon by doubling up their point total and holding an impressive 10-2 overnight lead.
The singles matches on day 2 saw much of the same domination by the South as the prior day, except for a small charge by the NCPGA. The first match out saw Raj Samra take his opponent the distance and win the first point of the day for the South by a score of 1 up. The South team did not record another point until Match 6 when Alex Hird drained a 50-foot birdie putt on the final hole to halve his match, which caused the dominos to fall the way of the South. The team either won, or halved, the final 5 of 6 matches clinching the cup for the South by a final total of 16-8.
Congratulations to the following captains and players that won the cup in 2018 for the South Team and represented our section proudly: Captain Steve Monday (SCPGA Staff), Captain Randy Chang, PGA (Journey at Pechanga), Mark Geddes (Coronado Golf Course), Raj Samra (Friendly Hills Country Club), Patrick Strandemo (The Santaluz Club), James Hochsprung (Black Gold Golf Club), Steve Tanis (Goose Creek Golf Club), Scott Cherry (Mission Hills Country Club), Kody Carrillo (Dos Lagos Golf Course), Zach Eddy (Mesa Verde Country Club), Kyle Mendoza (South Hills Country Club), Josh Rider (The Santaluz Club), Michael D’Angelo (Good Swings Happen), and Alex Hird (North Ranch Country Club).
