The 19th Challenge Cup is in the books with yet another Southern California victory!
As usual, the “Cup” came down to an exciting finish. The 4-Ball Matches on Day 1 were close with the SCPGA taking a 6 ½ to 5 ½ point lead. Entering Day 2 and the 24 Singles Matches, the four Super Senior (age 70+) matches were handily swept by our SCPGA Super Seniors, Tom Barber, Jim Petralia, John McFarland and Tom Sargent, putting the “Southerners” in a comfortable position that was short lived as the NCPGA roared back, pulling even with just two matches remaining.
Paul Holtby went to work and closed out his opponent 5 & 3. That left his playing companion Paul Dietsche in the hot seat to win the final point and secure the victory. Dietsche struck with a driver and then a near perfect 4 iron to the par 5 18th green, narrowly missing the flagstick and stopping within 10 feet for eagle. His opponent failing to reach the green in two, wedged to 15 feet, missed his birdie putt leaving Paul to cozy the eagle putt up to the hole for a concession birdie and the win; SCPGA 19 vs. NCPGA 17.
The SCPGA now leads the series 12 wins to 7 for NCPGA. 2019 will be the 20th renewal of the Senior Challenge Cup.
