All my life I have heard this statement. I continue to hear it stated all the time. Yet it is rarely, if ever, explained why golf is a mental game. People just state it, then leave it at that. To me, WHY golf is a mental game is VERY important.
As human beings, everything in our life we do is a reaction to a target, EVERYTHING! So golf is a mental game because of this: How do we react (in a game where nothing is moving) to a target (which we are not looking at)? We must play games in our mind.
This is the purpose of a SWING THOUGHT for me. Our swing thought gets us to react towards the target. Then we are playing golf as human beings, and our thinking in golf becomes simple. It also can be a long-term thought as it creates a reaction, not attempting to create and action. Most of what I hear in golf for a swing thought is a mechanical movement of the swing, not a reactionary movement.
My students enjoy this because I teach them to play golf as a human being.
