POWAY, CA – Marissa Chow of Honolulu, HI wins the 3rd Annual Women’s California State Open with a five-shot wire to wire victory at Maderas Golf Club.
Chow carried over the steady play from round one, where she built a four shot lead, and carded ten consecutive pars in the final round until birdieing the 11th. Megan Thothong of Dallas, TX and Hannah Kim of Sana Ana each kept firing to make a charge, but the error-free Chow never slipped heading down the stretch finding three birdies to only one bogey on the closing nine to finish with a two-under par 70 in the quest for the title.
“What’s funny is I didn’t really realize what I was shooting until I hit that back nine stretch” says Chow. “I wasn’t too comfortable on the first nine, but I just let it all go on the back nine and the ball just started rolling.” Marissa secured her victory with a birdie on the 18th hole, closing out a successful two days of play finishing eight under par, 136 total.
“It feels amazing. There are some really good players” commented Chow. “This is my second one as a pro and first one here and I will always remember the first.”
Low amateur honors go to SCPGA Junior Tour Alumni, Haley Moore of Escondido. Opening her first round with an even-par 72, Moore came out and separated herself from the field of amateurs with a second round three under par 69. Moore finished with a two day total of 142 (-3) total and placing her in solo second place. “The SCPGA Junior Tour definitely prepared me for where I am in college and this tournament today” said Haley Moore, SCPGA Junior Tour Alumni.
Congratulations to Jamie Jacob (a) of Encinitas for carding her first career Hole-in-One! Jacob hit a smooth 168-yard five-iron into the 15th hole for the Ace.
Chow will join past champions, Brianna Do (2017) and Alyaa Abdulghany (2016) on the perpetual trophy, which is housed at the SCGPA Headquarters. Chow also carries the torch of her predecessors going “wire-to-wire” for this third annual championship.
