The 117th California State Open is underway at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta, CA with the first round officially in the books with Southern California PGA member Kenny Pigman setting the pace and positioning himself atop the leaderboard. Pigman, of Goose Creek Golf Club, posted a first round score of (-6) 66 to lead the pack of 149 participants in the State Open. En route to Kenny’s stellar round, he carded ten birdies to take the early two stroke lead in the 72-hole Championship.
Four players find themselves two back from Pigman after posting a (-4) 68. Michael Block, PGA of Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club, Aliso Viejo, CA; Zane Thomas of Las Vegas, NV; Brian Prouty of Tucson, AZ; Ryan Ellerbrock of San Diego, CA.
The contestants in the morning wave took full advantage of the ideal conditions with 16 players carding under par. The afternoon heat, firmness and winds made for a challenging afternoon wave seeing only seven players post. First round had a stroke average of 75.08 and 37 players at even par or better.
The second round will begin tomorrow at 7:30am as the field will be battling to make the cut, with the low 60 and ties advancing.
