2014 SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PGA NIKE GOLF FALL TEACHING SUMMIT
Hosted by Desert Willow Golf Resort
As Teaching summits go, I have to say this may have been the most inspirational one of all!
First the setting of Desert Willow Golf Resort in October was immaculate and the staff should be commended for a well run event. In addition, the SCPGA Staff was well coordinated and all hands were on deck. From Tom Addis on down, there was great SCPGA Section presence.
Special thanks to all the sponsors. They made the summit even better for those who attended.
It’s not too often when you can sit in a room of so many accomplished professionals as well as listen to some of the best teachers in the business. The first morning started out with an incredible 3 hours of Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott – famed teachers Annika Sorenstam. They gave their insights into how they teach. They focus heavily on the mental side of the game and how to improve golfers ability to play the game. The phrase that stuck in my head that they said was, “are we in the technique business or are we in the play better golf business. Their motto is “Beyond Technique…the Art of Playing”. Their insights were many and I recommend their book, Play your best Golf Now. I have already implemented some of their techniques into my lessons and thy have helped my students make big improvements.
We also heard a presentation from Henry Brunton, PGA of Canada Master Professional. He has developed an incredible curriculum and business focused on coaching golf, not teaching golf. He was instrumental in developing the “Long Term Player Development Guide for Canada”. It’s a comprehensive program designed by experts in biomechanics, neuro-science, nutrition, physical training and of course golf coaching to coach the youth of Canada for the next generation. He taught the attendees coaching sessions verses teaching sessions and their effectiveness. It was an excellent presentation and for more information on Henry Brunton, simply Google search him…great stuff!
We also heard from Nikki Gatch, PGA and Larry Gilbert, PGA on the special characteristics of Player Development Programs. These programs are a great way to create new profit centers for golf clubs, create member retention at private clubs and simply a way to grow the game through helping players get into the game and to play and enjoy the game better. Nikki is the Regional Player Development Manager for the PGA of America and Larry Gilbert has successfully established a Player Development Program at Cota de Caza Golf and Racquet Club in Orange County, CA.
We also had the pleasure of hearing the wisdom of Ken Farrell, Jason Taylor, Susan Roll, Juliet Vaughn, and Lori Brock. They gave insights ranging from growing one’s lesson business to how to be innovative in a changing industry, to the special insights of being a female golf professional.
Lastly, we had the pleasure and honor of listening to Bill Harmon of the famed Harmon Golf family. He gave special insights that only Bill could give on life as the son of Claude Harmon and the brother of Craig, Butch and Dick. From stories of when Ben Hogan would visit for dinner to how he has assisted Jay Haas and his son Bill among many other PGA Tour stars was a wonderful treat to end an already great summit. He gave us insights into his teaching style, focus and what he thought was truly valuable to be a good teacher in this game.
Needless to say, I feel inspired by this summit and I suggest that if have not attended a teaching summit, that you go to the next one. They will change you and make you a better teacher.
